Know I really do think Bella and Mandrake knew who she was from the beginning, in the beginning of the movie her mother is running away from a yellow card it is literally the same car Aya later on finds abandoned in one of the rooms of the house. I'm pretty sure she also just wanted to make him a little bit more confident of himself and truly cared for him as a friend.
